Elvis is Alive and Well in Tupelo

HI folks -- last night at our opening reception for the Society of Automotive Historians meeting at Tupelo, Elvis popped out of nowhere and sang about eight songs for the group at the Hilton Garden Inn. OK, it wasn't quite Elvis, but he tried. And he went around the room handing out scarves to the flattered women, although a few women wanted nothing to do with him!
In listening to the songs that were sung -- and this guy was quite good -- I came to the following conclusion. Namely to link Elvis with cars, we have to go to the cars themselves that he owned, not to his lyrics. His films, however, are a different story. Elvis' songs were about relationships and people, love and disappointment, never about things. And that is why he is eternal to us rather than ephemeral, because he touched the human soul in ways that an object never can.
